MPs meet next week to discuss the debt crisis with finance officials
MPs from the parliamentary finance committee will meet officials from the finance ministry next week to discuss the European debt crisis and confusion over how much the new rescue package for Greece is actually costing.
Finance minister Jan Kees de Jager will not be at the briefing, a parliamentary spokesman told news agency ANP. The meeting has been requested by MPs themselves.
Later in August, before parliament officially resumes, there will be a debate with De Jager on the results of the EU leaders meeting on July 21. De Jager's two letters to parliament about the debt crisis will come up for discussion then, ANP said.
Last week, De Jager has sent a briefing to MPs explaining he had kept quiet about part of the latest EU rescue package for Greece because of fears about the financial markets reaction.
This is the second time there has been government misinformation about the size of the rescue deal for Greece.
After the July agreement was sealed, prime minister Mark Rutte insisted the total package was €109bn, including €50bn from the banks, but De Jager was later forced to correct him, saying the details were very complicated.
