The number of students leaving school without a diploma has been halved over the past decade. Minister Marja van Bijsterveldt (Education) announced that in the school year 2010-2011, almost 39,000 students dropped out of school, whereas in 2002 there were 71000.
According to her, the youth unemployment has not risen too hard and it remained relatively low compared to neighboring countries. She thinks it is important that young people leave school with a diploma. “We need the youngsters for the job market. The business and society need qualified employees, especially in the health care and technology sector.”
