The Dutch Identity card is too fragile to last for 10 years. Minister Liesbeth Spies (Domestic Affairs) writes to the Second Chamber. The chamber has voted to extend it from 5 to 10 years, but according to the minister it is temporarily not possible.

“The identity is in fact more vulnerable than the passport, both because this document is not protected with a cover and the visa pages and also the identity card in the format of credit card is used differently by their owners,” she writes.

A research on the cards which have been used for 5 years at most showed that 30 percent of the cards contain cracks. It resulted in problems mostly during reading of the chip, so the image could not be verified.
