The number of children injured by a bike accident in the past five years has increased significantly. This is mainly because children do not watch the traffic as they make phone calls, play games or chat on the bikes.
According to the figures from the Consumer and Safety Foundation, in the period 2006-2010, an average of 14,000 children per year were injured due to a bike accident. Annually, 2000 of them were also hospitalized.
Children are most often hospitalized for an injury to head or neck, like concussion and other skull/brain injury. Not only the number of injuries among children cycling to school increased, but also the number of children learning to cycle who were injured increased.
