ProRail and the Police will strengthen controls at railway crossings during the next few weeks.

Now that the schools have started again, extra attention needs to be paid to the first graders to ensure they cross the railway safely.

Those who are caught ignoring the crossing light or crawling under the barriers can be fined up to 180 euros. This year, 2000 fines are given out at railway crossings.

Last year, there were nine deaths at crossings. There are 22 accidents and two dead so far this year.
