Prominent campaigner Anna Hazare was arrested by Delhi Police hours before his fast against a proposed new anti-corruption law.

The arrest led to protests across the country and more than 500 supporters detained by the police, according to the local media.

India's Home Minister P Chidambaram said the detentions were because protesters had not obeyed police conditions for the demonstration.
