Small and medium companies in the European Union have been facing more difficulty in recent years to loan. Credit applications were rejected more often, according to the figures by the European statistical agency Eurostate.

More than one in five applications for a loan from Dutch companies is rejected.

In 2007, 84.3 percent of loan applications in the Netherlands were successful and 6.8 percent of requests were rejected. In 2010, the percentage of successful applications reduced to 61.3 percent and over 22 percent were rejected.

There are comparable figures in other EU countries. In Bulgaria, it was relatively more difficult to get loans. 36 percent of applications are rejected, while in 2006 only 3 percent failed.

Countries where it was relatively easier to get a loan include Finland, where 96 percent of applications were approved and Malta, with 91 percent approved. In Poland (85 percent), France and Belgium (both 83 percent), problems were limited.
